Mordred, a servant & Black Guard of Asmodeus.

Key EventI wasn’t but a few steps into the Red Canyons when I found this Bassilus character that the hypocrite was looking for. He was talking to a bunch of Skeletons & Zombies & my Conjurer ended up being our spokesman, letting Bassilus know that we were going to kill him. He didn’t take the news well & called his undead to fight for him. My subordinates assumed the protocol: My Berserker Sergeant went Enraged & had the task of killing the undead while my mages, 1) Conjurer cast Melf’s Acid Arrow; 2) Bard/Herald/Sage blasted him w/Magic Missile; 3) Illusionist cast Blindness & 4) Enchanter cast Ray of Enfeeblement. At that point one or two of the skeletons, armed w/Heavy Crossbows killed my Bard/Herald/Sage & took him out of the fight. I cast Doom @ Bassilus & my Enchanter followed up w/Charm…& it worked!!! Bassilus started killing his own undead. Somewhere in there I know my Conjurer cast a Flame Arrow @ him too so it must have hit before the Charm did or he probably would have turned hostile again. Bassilus cast an Entangle spell & just confused things as he tried to fend off attacks from his own undead. Of course my Berserker Sergeant didn’t care, he was just trying to kill Bassilus b/c he was casting spells & anyone who casts offensive spells against us is subject to his wrath. He died & gave up a great Warhammer +2 to my Berserker Sergeant - thing even gives off an electric charge when it hits. Then to make it even better, the hypocrite gave me 5000gps. Heck, I already had enough to raise my Bard/Herald/Sage & raise the old rep too!  Another brilliant victory for Asmodeus here on the Prime Material Plane!!!

1upd.jpg

PICKIN' UP BONES & KNOCKIN' DOWN BASILLUS!

Following that battle, everything was business as usual. I killed 5 Dread Wolves, 9 Wolves, 8 Skelton’s w/Composite Longbows, 8 Hobgoblins w/Short Bows, 4 Bandits, 6 Ghasts, 3 Ghouls, & a gaggle of Zombies. I learned again, due to two close calls, that even now it’s not safe to wade into combat w/Ghasts or even Ghouls. Twice I was Held & my subordinates had to strike hard & fast to save my stupid butt. They did well. I’m satisfied to know that my Conjurer & my Berserker Sergeant respect me & will fight to keep me alive…knowing that it is I who’s coat tails they need to ride!

** Self-imposed restriction: I require my mages to ALWAYS select spells from their school to learn & memorize in spell slots. They can use others, only one of each from other schools, but after writing all the spells they can for their intelligence, if they find one from their own school, they have to choose one to remove in deference to the spell from their school. Same w/memorization, they must learn spells from their school first before others which I only allow them to learn one of. Any extra memorized spell slots have to go to spells from their school.  Bards & plain vanilla Mages aren’t restricted in this way.

Thanks.  BG1 can indeed take considerably less than a day if the aim is to to do it quickly - though a wizard slayer is not a good kit for a speed run.  At the back of my mind I've got a potential challenge for the future of trying to complete the trilogy in a day, but that would need to wait for the unlikely event where I've got a day with no other responsibilities ...

Well, you'd need some luck I guess, but the potential is there.

According to Speed Demos, BG1 record is 21 minute, BG2 23 minutes (outright hilarious video), and a freakin' 5 minutes ToB.

For me that means getting somewhere in Beregost. :D

Give or take, theoretically, you could finish BGT in an hour.

You are correct.  I allow them to memorize one spell from other schools. An Illusionist only has reflected Image & Blindness @ level 1; a Conjurer Armor & Grease (Find Familiar too but only for the PC).  Now...the Conjurer gets Melf's  Acid Arrow @ Level 2 @ Flame Arrow @ Level 3 so you can load all those in memorized slots, I added one Power Word Sleep for Edwin @ Level 2.  Enchanters w/Sleep, Charm Person, Dire Charm...good for filling up all your memory slots, oh & ray of Enfeeblement has been really effective a time or two.  You'll have fun.  Go for it.  One regular Mage or Sorcerer from the start (not a specialist) might be a plus to give you a wider variety than his/her fellow specialists.  You COULD use Level1NPCs & make Imoen a vanilla Mage (she was always sneakin' into Gorion's room & looking over his scrolls) instead of starting as a thief so she could fulfill that role & then you could keep the Gnomish Transmuter idea for your PC.

Good luck.  Here's what Mordred from Camelot, ugh, Candlekeep's been doin.'!  CKT

Mordred is doing well! And I repeat: it's great fun reading his journal, makes me smile all the time. I also like how it's Asmodeus who decides where he goes.
As to my mages, they'll have to wait for now. I'm first trying to get Teyl through Chateau Irenicus, with difficulty I must say....

Good to see you all are doing well... I'm still being constantly vexed by basically re-learning the game with SCS installed; my furthest PC I've gotten off this install was only to the Bandit camp, losing at least 10 other characters to various mishaps. Nearly every single one spell-caster based (the only one that wasn't was my aforementioned Bandit Camp entry, only to be shot full of arrows after trying numerous tactics to clear the guards. And that embarrassing encounter where I absentmindedly allowed Shoal into talking distance with my PC.)

Like a sucker, though, I'll officially submit another character: Micah, a Neutral Good half-elf fighter/cleric. Mods in spoiler.

Spoiler

So basically SCS, RR and IR, as far as I can tell, though a few tweaks might affect gameplay, though I don't think I've tried any illegal race/class combos yet. Interestingly and somewhat frustratingly, the one line about fine weapons not breaking isn't actually true, as I've had several fine weapons break on me during my misadventures.

Anyways, the character: 18/61, 18, 18, 8, 18, 8. Started my game as I usually do, taking Imoen (because SCS is brutal and I can't figure out how to survive solo...), burying my late foster-father, and heading south and then west to play "snipe Shoal" for a level for Imoen and... nothing for Micah. Well. A few fights later with a ghast and giant spider soon fix that, and I come out of this 1/2. Kivan is recruited: I suspect I'll need the ranged damage output before long, and Imoen... isn't the best for that. Melicamp is dechickenified for 2/2 for Micah: terrible hitpoint roll though, sitting at 19 now, so I must've rolled two ones on both the d8 and the d10. Imoen has better health than me at this point, for crying out loud.

Neera is rescued: this being EE, I've always wanted to try to get through with a wild-mage being my sole mage. Well, this is going to be the attempt... Unfortunately, her proficiency is in Quarterstaff, but her 7 hit points say no melee. Sleep and Identify spells is what she's been used for yet (and no surges have happened yet!) The spiders in Landrin's house are taken care of and the Ogre up north is similarly disposed of. Tarnesh died for the second time taking nobody down with him, a Command and a Sleep both landing before he can fire off his PWS.

I did look at a few of those attempts, but they all rely heavily on using cheats / glitches (which I wouldn't want to do).  In addition they are done as a whole sequence of segments done over a long period (the 23 minute BG2 run you link to took a year to complete!) - I had in mind trying to complete the trilogy at a single sitting in the same fashion as I did previously just with BG1.

Seems I posted too soon: another run lost to Neira as Hold Person managed to snag 4 of us before I could abuse the door trick and Neira saved vs mine. Well then...

Hard luck Epsil0.  Spreading your party out is a good idea when facing casters - hold person only has a small radius of effect, though you need much greater separation against mage spells like sleep and horror.

As NPC mages go, I find Neira as equally valuable as Edwin is. Her interactions with the PC are fine, but the story line and dialog just don't cut it.

Paarthurnax - Chaotic Evil Elven Dragon Disciple lvl 8 - kills 278 (greater basilisk)

HP : 70 (6HD + 2) (6hp from familiar)

1st : MM, Armor, Find Familiar (i'm an idiot lol), spook, pfp

2nd : M I, Glitterdust, Web

3rd : Skull Trap, Remove magic

4th : stoneskin

So much has happened since last update, I should've posted last night but was to tired.  I killed Tranzig then headed towards the bandit camp, all the bandits outside of the tent were dealt with the blinding dust MM tactic.  Entered the bandit tent and blinding the gnoll, hobgoblin, and the two humans, used skull traps and that just about does it.  Went down to get the constitution book, the tome plus my draconic ability of +1 con every five levels got me to a CON of 16, which boosted my HP up to its max.  I also got the fist lvl spell find familiar by accident (at least it wasn't a wasted 5 or 6 lvl spell lol).  I went to deal with the gazers to the east, they were of no difficulty and kirian was dealt with the blinding dust and skull tactic.  Went to go get the chr book and do all the killin around that region, leaving Drizzt, and probably leaving Drizzt for the rest of the game, MR at his rate against a sorcerer who can't hit the broad side of a barn is not a good idea.

Finished up all the to do lists on the western side maps, then decided its high time for my least favorite in all of the BG's, poisonwood.  I skipped spider and ettercap country as much as i could, i just took the path to the north.  I did manage to do the wyvern cave though, I did my chessy little blinding dust and skull trap trick, and it worked nicely.  At the mine I dealt with the group outside by first webbing them (x2 for more improved holding and insuring their savings fail) then MM and skull traps.  The mine is the worse place for a sorcerer to rest especially on the second level, so I had to leave the mine every rest or be ambushed by 10 guards.  Davaeron and the two battle horrors weren't as hard as i imagined they would be.  I casted skull traps to lure them out, then blinded, but they saved against both spells, they both swung and I thought this game was over, but nope, at 110% (50 ability + 40 ring + 20 robe) I easily resisted their would've been 10-15 swings a piece, i moved in to web dave but he spotted me then casted Lightning, but he followed up by a fireball and with them swinging, it healed me up, not much, but hey, its health.  With two skulls and two webs, he was done for with my remaining MM's and a really nice 27 breath attack centered on the two battles and him.

A fight that I thought would surely end this run, my fire healing is actually really helpful.  Anyway, its on to BG, after I flooded the mine.

Seems like I'm introducing a new character nearly every day since I can't keep my other ones alive.

This time a straight Cleric: not sure why I didn't kit, but plain cleric it is. I didn't cap my level 1 self: my death rate's too high for that, so here's my first record of myself at level 5. No tomes found. Arthur_zps8bc17a32.png

So started as usual, Shoal to Melicamp to clearing the easy Nashkel tasks. I took a risk here and went for Neera immediately after: it was successful as I landed a Command onto the mage before he could cast. The dwarven assassin was fought and killed after much more kiting, and then we headed north to finish off the FAI quests. With the intent of clearing the Basilisk area for the much-needed experience - I really wanted my level 3 spells before going to Nashkel - I returned to High Hedge to purchase Pfp. And... Well... this ended interestingly with weird spawns and a huge call for help radius. SkelsHigh_zps51f69ac7.png

I won... eventually. The basilisks were cleared with no problem, Mutamin giving me a shock and delight as 1.) Korax immediately paralyzed him through his MIs, making him a non-factor, and 2.) he had the boots of cheetah speed on him from the randomizer. Ha! Anyways, level 5 was achieved for myself and I headed south to face dear Neira. This had a decidedly better outcome than last time. NeiraVeng_zps0416555e.png

Neera (why the similar names...) began bugging me about Adoy, and so we head off... north. I wanted a warrior-type just in case, and I haven't played with Ajantis since my first run. Recruited him, fought a couple Ankhegs for the experience, and headed back south to clear the enclave. Neera actually died... to a goblin rogue that backstabbed her. Didn't even see the thing go invisible. One rez later, and we're fighting the Red Wizards while Adoy sits out the battle as a small fuzzy mammal. For the first time, I manage to finish the enclave without a single death: two Hold Persons utterly wrecked the two distracted-by-skeleton mages, and Neera blinded and slept the brutes as necessary.

Final risk I took was in facing down Bassilus. We won: Bassilus_zps6637166a.png

even though he saved vs basically every spell I lobbed at him. The one spell we managed to interrupt was his Unholy Blight I think, and so it's kind of lucky that I'm alive. Anyways. Due to carelessness on my part, Ajantis was held by a ghast in front of basically a firing squad of bandits, so I've got to raise him and then off we go to Nashkel mines.

Curses!! I really need to figure out how to post screen shots.  I just killed Sarevok with Paarthunax, and it was a great battle, really big cliff hanger, but that wand of 12HD summons with the Mage Ring that doubles 1st level spells, Sarevok resisted my breath attack (manual says its suppose to bypass resistances, but Sarevok resisted it).  Anyway, it was a good fight, I really need to learn to images here.  Paarthunax has completed the no-reload challenge and is heading on to Baeloth's Black Pits

Augur - dwarven wizard slayer (update 1)

I thought I would have another go at making progress with one of these.  To compensate for the fact the wizard slayer can't get at the strength tome I rolled until I got a 18(00) strength - hence the reason for him being rather deficient in wisdom as well as charisma .

Progress has been mainly standard - Shoal to get level 3, Beregost tasks level 4, basilisks level 5 & 6.  To get an extra scroll of magic protection compared to my last wizard slayer attempt Augur also killed Bentan (standing next to the map edge in case Bentan managed to complete a spell - he didn't).  Killing him also reduces reputation which will eventually enable Augur to get Bhaal horror abilities, which will make progress much easier for him.

He's just finished in the lighthouse area.  Once again there the first group managed to confuse him and this time he ran far enough to prompt one of them to fire 3 arrows.  He was poisoned once, meaning he only had 21 HPs left when he moved on to Sil's group - but that proved to be no problem.  Shooting the golems and then clearing the rest of the area got him to level 7 - there were a welcome maximum 15 HPs there, although he's still slightly below average for his level.

Thanks Mr_Goldbeard - sounds like you've been doing some good work with Paarthunax!

Augur - dwarven wizard slayer (2nd and final update)

Before going to the Nashkel mine Augur bought some full plate.  With criticals required by the kobolds he moved through that without problems and shot Mulahey down without letting him talk.

Augur then travelled back to Nashkel, only to find Nimbul was absent.  After going back to the mines he opened the treasure chest to read the letters and went back to Nashkel - this time Nimbul was there, but he wasn't quick enough to talk.

Tranzig was poisoned by an arrow of biting and failed to get a spell off as Augur moved on to the bandit camp.  The bandits were all quickly shot (though Taugosz was finished off in melee to speed things up a bit).  Augur missed his initial shot at Venkt and ran out of the tent.  Raemon and Britik followed, to their doom, before another arrow of biting poisoned Venkt.  He failed to recover and Hakt was beaten up to finish things off.

In the Cloakwood he used a protection from poison scroll while getting Spider's Bane, then moved on to the mine.  Drasus was pulled back to the edge of the map, where he put up a good struggle, without quite making Augur run away.  By contrast, Genthore failed to land a blow.  Augur then tried to use Bhaal horror on the mages only to realise he hadn't got it - despite having rested several times since the bandit camp.

That's distinctly annoying, but I accepted the loss and Augur moved on to the mages.  Both of them managed to cast disabling spells despite being hit and Augur had to run off the map to avoid having to save.  Returning, he poisoned Kysus.  Again, despite that, the mage got a flame arrow off, but this time Augur chose to stick around and take the damage and one more shot finished Kysus off.  Rezdan had been poisoned earlier and was already at near death and a single further shot was also enough for him.

Augur was successful in pulling the guards away without alerting Hareishan and moved down to Daveorn.  He stranded the battle horrors upstairs and then used a scroll of magic protection to make the fight with Daveorn a foregone conclusion.  Resting after that he did get the expected Bhaal horror, so at least has one of those to play with.

A whistle-stop tour of the Sword Coast pushed his reputation up to 20 and got him to level 8 before moving on to Baldur's Gate.  There Augur picked up the dexterity tome.  For once I didn't bother with wisdom. but wanted intelligence as something that could be given up in the dream sequence.  Ramazith was shot with arrows of biting, while the ghasts received exploding ones.

After picking up the Helm of Balduran Augur attacked the Iron Throne.  I was hoping to avoid running away again, but Diyab ignored being hit with 3 exploding arrows and saved against a horror.  By the time Augur tried to run from his flame strike, the spell had already targeted him and followed him downstairs with nasty consequences.  Augur's not allowed potions at all in BG1 (I haven't decided what to do in BG2 yet), but a Bhaal LMD and CLW restored him enough to hang around.  In the event he was able to finish off the remaining opposition with only being hit once more by Zhalimar.

At Candlekeep Augur used DUHM to open one tomb and then fought his way past some dopplegangers.  He used exploding arrows on Prat's party - Bor managing just one shot with his darts of stunning (which missed).  The green scroll from the Iron Throne let him safely past the greater basilisks.

Back in the City there was nothing left to buy, so Augur went immediately after Slythe.  I realised there that perhaps I should have got the Eagle Bow, but continued anyway and a single arrow of dispelling was enough to slow him down and set him up for an easy kill.  At the palace, Augur was lucky that his single Bhaal horror affected 3 of the dopplegangers and the other 3 were soon dispelled and dealt with.  I was trying to avoid getting too much XP so attempted to let the guards finish off the 3 scared ones.  However, when the last of them killed Liia I decided it was time to get involved to complete the job.

Augur ran through the maze, ignoring the enemies there and then bypassed the Undercity party to get to the temple.  Inside, he triggered the lightning traps and then rested.  He took just a couple of shots to dispel Sarevok and then filled him full of arrows for quite a while (not using the Eagle Bow meant no strength bonus and reduced damage by about 60%).  He still had plenty of ammunition, but tried to come into melee for the finishing hit.  However, I'd misjudged it as Sarevok survived one hit, while responding with 3 hits of his own and Augur had to return to using his bow to make the fatal shot.

After resting, Augur ran back through the maze and reported to Duke Belt for his next assignment.

Nice work, Mr_Goldbeard and Grond0. Safe travels in Amn. And keep good progress, everyone!

The Story of Impish Face & Co (Werewolf's Isle).

I like that Isle. And I like it even more with SCS' changes of it. The possibility of not fighting Kaishas is just a relief and much appreciated.

Long story short. We made ourselves a name withing a village by helping locals. Fighting wolfweres wasn't hard - Jaheira (Gauntlets of Dexterity, Full Plate +1, Large Shield +1, Golden girdle, Helm/Cloak of Balduran) has unmodified AC -8 (plus -7 vs slashing) so they could hit her only on criticals and Impish Face helped from afar with Throwing Axe +2. Pretty much a walk in a park. Huge wolf pack from the first deck of shipwreck was lured outside to be eliminated and then Jaheira soloed the rest. Daese was lured outside as well, Khalid missed 5 times in a row with Dispelling Arrows (what a waster...) but connected with 6th and her fate was sealed. Looks like Greater Wolfweres (and Loup Garou) are modified by SCS so they no longer susceptible to Wand of Paralyzation and Jaheira couldn't hit Karoug fast enough to counter his regeneration so the rest of the crew joined the fray with double Wand of Heavens and tripple Wand of Frost blasts which was just enough.

The randomized loot from shipwreck was Golden Plate and Greenstone Amulet (nice! Kirinhale, be ready!)

We didn't fought Sirine Queen for Evan's body and retrieved it peacefully but then Imoen robbed her blind for Pearl necklace, 20 arrows of bitting AND Large Shield +2 (yay!).

Maralee and Delainy helped us to persuade Kaishas out of fight and we set sail back peacefully. Mendas (or Selaad) was lured out of house to be dispelled, killed and once he turned into Loup Garou he got another Fire/Cold treatment via wands. Baresh refused to go outside and moreover he multiplied every time when Jaheira went in and out so we enter and fought 3 Loup Garou at once. Jaheira tanked great and soon it was all over (though quest doesn't switched to completed in our journal, strange... ). Baresh dropped Martial Staff +3.

Well, even though we all hit level cap at the moment and collected all the Tomes already we are going to explore the improved Durlag's Tower further.

to be continued...

Nice going there, Serg. Looks like we prefer a similar mod setup.

I also like that it's possible to get a peaceful solution with Kaishas. It's a pity that the PC must be good aligned, though.

Robbing there sirine queen, haha. That shield you found will suit Jaheira and make her an even better tank, right?

Thanks, Jianson.  :)  I like my current setup and I'm going to modify my SoA/ToB one as well with some tactical challenges of SCSII (not all of them though), Randomiser (love this!), aTweaks and polytweak. Should be a tasty explosive mixture... ^_^

I didn't know that PC should be good aligned to be able to persuade Kaishas, But then, I never run evil ones (as protagonist. Viconia is always in my crew) as I don't know how to cook them right...

About Sirine Queen - I didn't want to kill her (imo she is right with her judgement) but I was also aware that she should possess some kind of randomised loot. And we just found a potion of master thievery in shipwreck so I've though *Well, why not?*. Cast Improved Invisibility on Imoen just in case she would be spotted so she could run away but she performed brilliant. That shield indeed went to Jaheira and those three Baresh' Loup Garou didn't hit her even once! Love this girl!  :D

*blinks slowly* Well. That's a spell I never expected to see in BG1. Got attacked by an ambush and foolishly didn't just flee immediately. Got hit by a Flesh to Stone, and failed my save. Huh. I think I'll play on though, but Arthur's out.

I think at least Neutral characters should be able to avoid this fight. My current character acts mostly like someone Neutral Good would act, but she is True Neutral for a technical reason (Druid).

What ambush was this?
Do you have a mod that raises the level of enemies? FtS requires a level 12 mage (or the use of a scroll). In the vanilla game, I think only Semaj can cast it (and maybe a few others that you normally don't fight, like Shandalar (which I know can cast Globe of Invulnerability)).

There are several mods that change Jaheira's alignment to Neutral Good for example. I think, no one would object if you'll tweak your character as well (if you feel of her that way). There aren't much changes with that tweak gameplay wise (druids can't turn undeads one way or another depending on their alignment). The only notable change I could think is that she will be susceptible to Unholy Blights then...

Just a quick note of Impish Face' run. Armed with Greenstone Amulet we just dealt with Kirinhale (I don't like having unfinished business behind and debts unpaid...). She is still extremely annoying with her constant *Etherial > Uninjured* behavior. First Jaheira tried alone and managed to bring Kirinhale at near death only to witness her at full health few moments later, so Khalid joined the fray though with little success. Finally Viconia used a Potion of Magic Protection and deliver a coup-de-grace.. Got Wand of Monster Summoning out of her.

I'm almost certain it was from a scroll, and it came from one of the moved ambushes from SCS. The gnome party, if I'm not mistaken. The other explanation is that Neera surged, but I wasn't targeting my PC with anything so that's unlikely.

Could it be a Chromatic Orb instead, with petrify on a failed save? I'm quite sure Davaeorn uses it.

Oh, a chromatic orb makes far, far more sense than a scrolled FtS. Still requires a mage at level 10, though.

I was also commenting about the possibility of chromatic orb causing petrification without realising there were further posts on the next page ...
